An uplifting speech made by a former Detroit mayor is played against a backdrop of devastating images from the city's history. One resident says it's as if a war took place and was never cleaned up.

Detroit was built for two million but is home to only 800,000 residents. An auto executive and an artist drive through the city explaining what has happened and why. It is a dark, cautionary tale for the industrialized world.

One hundred years ago the birth of the automobile in Detroit heralded a second American revolution of mass production and consumerism. The car went on to change the geography of cities around the world--none as strongly as the Motor City.

Henry Ford helped create the consumer society by inventing the automobile. An urban explorer gives a tour of Highland Park, home to the world's first automated assembly line. Today the building is in ruins.

By redrawing the map of the rapidly expanding city of Detroit with independent suburbs like Highland Park, the "big three" automakers siphoned the wealth out of the city. Bankrupt, Highland Park hasn't enough money to tear down the ruins.

In 1914 Henry Ford turned workers into consumers when he nearly doubled the average wage. By coming to Detroit Americans could become part of the middle class.

Workers came from the South when auto plants opened to Black workers. But Detroit auto-makers imported prejudices as well, dividing everything along racial lines. This policy of virtual apartheid would tear the city apart

Duke Ellington and other Famous Black artists played at this once spectacular venue. As cameras are filming scavengers are pulling pipes from the ceiling.

The mid 1920s saw a clash of automotive giants, pitting GM's new ideas of style against Ford's tried and true no frills utility. The outcome of this epic battle would determine the course of the American dream and transform the geography of cities.

Detroit's economy collapsed overnight because of the Depression. The recession lingered on through the 1930s, plunging autoworkers below the poverty line. Their struggle for a living wage drew them into conflict with the "Big Three".
