For the next two years, Sandy races Blue Grass, but discovers that the horse wears himself out too quickly and can only win the shorter heats. Soon, the Armisteads buy a new horse named Tarzana, which is also entered into the Kentucky Derby.

The story revolves around a colt born in Kentucky and named “Blue Grass”, the training of the colt to win the Kentuck Derby, and how all of that affected the lives, fortunes, relationships, and romances of the people associated with the colt’s race-track career.
Their stable has struggled, but they are preparing their promising new thoroughbreds Encino and Tarzana for the Kentucky Derby. Lin is in love with James B. Armistead's daughter Pat, though her wealth intimidates him.
