David T. Howard High School was a school for African American students in Atlanta, Georgia. It has many prominent alumni. In 2018 the school was being renovated for a planned 2020 reopening as a middle school.
6 de abr. de 2017 · David T. Howard opened in 1947 (formerly an elementary school of the same name) as Atlanta's second high school dedicated to the African-American community. The only other high school for African-American's was Booker T. Washington high school which remains in use.

History. The first African-American High Shcool in the city of Atlanta. The Beginning. In 1923, the City of Atlanta opened the David T. Howard Grammar School located in the block bounded by Houston, Randolph, Howell and Irwin Streets.
10 de abr. de 2018 · It’s been more than 40 year since students last walked the halls of David T. Howard High School. The school played a role in educating a young Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and Atlanta’s former mayor, Maynard Jackson, and NBA Legend Walt Frazier permanently closed its doors in 1976.

Howard, a former slave who founded Atlanta’s first black-owned bank, donated the 7.5 acres at 551 John Wesley Dobbs Ave., for an elementary school that opened in 1923 bearing his name. In 1948, the school became a high school that educated some legendary alumni until it closed in 1976.
