Benjamin Herschel Babbage (6 August 1815 – 22 October 1878) was an English engineer, scientist, explorer and politician, best known for his work in the colony of South Australia. He invariably signed his name "B. Herschel Babbage" and was frequently referred to as "Herschel Babbage".

He was shocked by what he found, and the results of his report, and Patrick’s persistence, were that Haworth gained a reservoir, a cleaner water supply and more toilets.
Benjamin Herschel Babbage (1815-1878), engineer, scientist and explorer, was born in London, son of Charles Babbage, Cambridge professor of mathematics (1828-39), and his wife Georgina, sister of W. W. Whitmore, a founder of South Australia.
