  1. Claud Hamilton, 1st Lord Paisley (3 June 1546 – 3 May 1621) was a Scottish nobleman who fought at the Battle of Langside in 1568 for Mary, Queen of Scots. He is the ancestor of the earls, marquesses and dukes of Abercorn.

  2. Class pioneer No 1900 Claud Hamilton featuring red lining and connecting rods, copper chimney cap and GER coat of arms was much admired when it was exhibited at the 1900 Paris Exposition. The original S46 boiler had 1,630 sq ft (151 m 2) of heating surface, with a 21.3 sq ft (1.98 m 2) grate.

  4. Claud Hamilton was built to GER order (and class) S46. At that point it was the largest express locomotive on the GER. Although it kept the GER standard sized 7ft driving wheels, it had a large round-topped 4ft 9in boiler. A spacious cab was fitted with two side windows.
