Imperial Moscow University was one of the oldest universities of the Russian Empire, established in 1755. It was the first of the twelve imperial universities of the Russian Empire. Its legacy is continued as Lomonosov Moscow State University, which occupies some of its original buildings.

Sechenov’s history begins in 1758 as the Faculty of Medicine at Imperial Moscow University. The university takes its name from 19th-century scientist Ivan Sechenov, a physiologist who laid the foundations for the study of reflexes, animal and human behavior, as well as neuroscience.
Until 1804 the activities of Moscow University were governed by the Imperial Decree on the Establishment of Moscow University. In 1804, with the approval of the Charter the University gained a great deal of independence.
