The Genesee Wesleyan Seminary was the name of two institutions located on the same site in Lima, New York. The first Genesee Wesleyan Seminary was founded in 1831 by the Genesee Annual Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church after the Conference appointed a committee for to establish the seminary in 1829.
Genesee College was founded as the Genesee Wesleyan Seminary, in 1831, by the Methodist Episcopal Church. The college was located in Lima, New York , and eventually relocated to Syracuse , becoming Syracuse University .

He attended the Genesee Wesleyan Seminary, a liberal arts college-preparatory institution in 1845 and later that year was admitted to Wesleyan College, in Middletown, Connecticut - the best that Methodist higher education had to offer at the time. It is here that he met Ellen Stowe, who would become his wife and lifetime partner in ministry.
