James Hepburn, 1st Duke of Orkney and 4th Earl of Bothwell (c. 1534 – 14 April 1578), better known simply as Lord Bothwell, was a prominent Scottish nobleman. He was known for his marriage to Mary, Queen of Scots, as her third and final husband.

He evidently engineered the murder of Mary’s second husband, Henry Stewart, Lord Darnley, thereby precipitating the revolt of the Scottish nobles and Mary’s flight to England, where she was imprisoned by Queen.

James Hepburn, the only son of Patrick Hepburn, 3rd Earl of Bothwell, and his wife, Agnes Sinclair, was born in about 1535. His parents divorced when he was a child and he was brought up by his great-uncle, Patrick Hepburn, bishop of Moray. Hepburn was sent to Paris to finish his education.
