Michel-Étienne Turgot was the father of the famous Anne Robert Jacques Turgot, economist and Minister of Louis XVI and Étienne-François Turgot, naturalist, administrator of Malta and governor of French Guiana.
Michel-Étienne Turgot, marquis de Sousmont, seigneur de Bons, Ussy, Brucourt, est un magistrat français né le 9 juin 1690 et mort le 1 er février 1751. Il est prévôt des marchands de Paris de 1729 à 1740 .
Michel Étienne Turgot est nommé conseiller d'État par semestre en 1737 puis ordinaire en 1744. Il devient président au Grand Conseil en 1741, et est admis à l'Académie des inscriptions et belles-lettres en 1743 où il est membre honoraire en remplacement du cardinal de Fleury.
Michel-Étienne Turgot (1690-1751), à la tête de la municipalité parisienne en tant que prévôt des marchands, décide de commander un nouveau plan de Paris. Il confie ce chantier à Louis Bretez, qui n’est pas cartographe, mais membre de l’Académie des beaux-arts et professeur de perspective.

Michel-Étienne Turgot was the father of the famous Anne Robert Jacques Turgot, economist and Minister of Louis XVI and Étienne-François Turgot, naturalist, administrator of Malta and governor of French Guiana. Son and father were buried in the Chapel of Hôpital Laënnec in Paris.
Turgot was effectively mayor of Paris for some years. Bretez was the architect-cartographer he charged with drawing up the superbly clear and descriptive bird’s-eye-view map of Paris that carries his name (‘Plan Turgot’ of 1734–39).
