He gained the rank of Lieutenant in the service of the Scots Guard. He was invested as a Companion, Order of the Bath (C.B.). He was styled as Viscount Bury between 1891 and 1894.

Known for his diminuitive stature, he was a close friend of the Prince of Wales.This caricature, and those of RCIN 917008 and 914270, have all traditionally been attributed to Arnold Keppel, 8th Earl of Albemarle.
This caricature, and those of RCIN 917009 and 917008, have all traditionally been attributed to Arnold Keppel, 8th Earl of Albemarle. Keppel was, however, only eight years old when this watercolour was executed, which makes his authorship seem unlikely.
