Frederick York Wolseley (16 March 1837 – 8 January 1899) was an Irish-born New South Wales inventor and woolgrower who invented and developed the first commercially successful sheep shearing machinery after extensive experimentation. [1] It revolutionised the wool industry.

Frederick York Wolseley (1837-1899), inventor, was born at Kingstown, County Dublin, Ireland, on 16 March 1837, second son of Major Garnet Joseph Wolseley and his wife Frances Anne, née Smith; his elder brother Garnet became Field Marshal Viscount Wolseley.

Frederick Wolseley’s invention of the first commercially successful sheep shearing machine in Australia revolutionised the sheep shearing industry. Wolseley was a great promoter of his machines. He visited shearing sheds to give practical lessons and demonstrated the machines at agricultural shows.
