Overview. Black Is...Black Ain't is an exploration and comprehensive commentary of the Black experience in America. Riggs establishes that there is no singular definition of what it means "to be Black." The very form and content illustrate Blackness in its multiplicities.
Told from Riggs’ hospital bed as he dies to AIDS, the film acts as a eulogy for an artist who believes in Black futures enough to believe we can move beyond the narrow definitons that patriarchy, sexism, and homophobia offer our culture.
