Open air schools or schools of the woods were purpose-built educational institutions for children, that were designed to prevent and combat the widespread rise of tuberculosis that occurred in the period leading up to the Second World War.

Since the beginning of the 20th century open air schools have been built to help physically weak children gain strength aided by sun and fresh air. In 1927 Duiker and Bijvoet were commissioned to design such a school in Amsterdam-South.
The Open Air School on Cliostraat Street is part of a series of schools that were mostly located in the countryside and were intended for sick children, to help them gain strength with the help of the sun and fresh air. Duiker designed the first outdoor school for the healthy child in the inner courtyard of an urban block.

Since the beginning of the 20th century, open-air schools have been built to help physically weak children gain strength with the help of sunshine and fresh air.
