The Crypt School is a grammar school with academy status for boys and girls in Gloucester, founded in 1539 by John and Joan Cooke. It has a history of producing notable alumni in religion, sports, academia and arts, and is the only fully coeducational selective school in the city.
Founded in 1539, The Crypt School is one of the oldest schools in the country. Now on its fourth site at Podsmead, the School’s work and ethos is still informed by the vision of its founders, John and Joan Cooke: to provide a free, grammar school education to bright children, regardless of their background.
Many students join the school in Year 12 from other local schools and colleges and they find a welcoming and supportive environment. Students new to the school quickly establish themselves making friends with our existing students who joined Year 12 from Year 11.

The 3,600 square feet of the Crypt feature arched limestone walls that support the Statehouse, brick floors, and wrought-iron lanterns. It houses the Statehouse Museum, artifacts and exhibits, and office spaces.
