The prince was a son of King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) and Chao Chom Manda Thapthim Rochanatisha. He was the king's 17th child.

Prince Chirapravati Voradej, the Prince of Nakhon Chaisi was instrumental in reorganising the army in 1905, he later served as Minister of Defence from 1910-1913. The division was formed in 1905 by the command of King Chulalongkorn on the recommendation of the Prince Chirapravati Voradej, the director of operations of the Ministry of Defence.
