Born Alexandra Anastasia Phillips, she was the eldest daughter of Lieutenant Colonel Harold "Bunny" Phillips and Georgina Wernher. Her paternal grandparents were Colonel Joseph Harold John Phillips and Mary Mercedes Bryce, daughter of John Pablo Bryce.
