The Subterraneans is a 1958 novella by Beat Generation author Jack Kerouac. It is a semi-fictional account of his short romance with Alene Lee (1931–1991), an African-American woman, in Greenwich Village, New York.

Although The Subterraneans was the first feature length film adaptation of a Kerouac work, a short film based on Kerouac's writing, entitled Pull My Daisy, was produced in 1958, directed by Robert Frank and Alfred Leslie and starring beat poet Allen Ginsberg.
After an arguing with his mother he leaves into the night where he accidentally meets a group of poets, artists and philosophers who drag him to a subterranean bar where Yuri, a vagabond poet, introduces him to Mardou a beautiful blonde girl.
