Moeritherium was a rotund semi-aquatic mammal with short, stubby legs that lived about 37–35 million years ago. Its body shape and lifestyle demonstrate convergent evolution with pigs, tapirs, and the pygmy hippopotamus.
Moeritherium, extinct genus of primitive mammals that represent a very early stage in the evolution of elephants. Its fossils are found in deposits dated to the Eocene Epoch (55.8–33.9 million years ago) and the early part of the Oligocene Epoch (33.9–23 million years ago) in northern Africa.

14 de abr. de 2008 · Moeritherium was a semi-aquatic proboscidean that ate freshwater plants and lived in swamps or river systems 37 million years ago. Its fossil teeth reveal its diet and habitat, but not its evolutionary connection to modern elephants.
