Maria, then twenty-two, was the queen of the bunch. Her uncle, Horace Walpole, called her "Beauty itself" and, when he introduced her to the forty-three-year-old Lord Waldegrave, the latter was soon captivated, despite his being generally thought of as a confirmed bachelor.
