Frances Jones Dandridge (August 6, 1710 – April 9, 1785) was the mother of Martha Washington, the first First Lady of the United States. She was born in New Kent County, Virginia. Her father Orlando Jones and maternal grandfather Colonel Gideon Macon served on the House of Burgesses in Colonial Virginia.
John Dandridge (born 1758 or 1762–1799) was a Virginia lawyer, planter and politician in New Kent County, Virginia, which he represented in the Virginia House of Delegates for four terms.

John Dandridge built a comfortable, two-story house called Chestnut Grove on his plantation, about thirty-five miles from the colonial capital at Williamsburg. He eventually assumed sought-after positions such as clerk of the New Kent County court, colonel in the local militia, and vestryman in his parish church.
When John Maxwell Dandridge was born on 15 April 1756, in Hanover, Virginia, British Colonial America, his father, Nathaniel West Dandridge Sr, was 26 and his mother, Dorothea Spotswood, was 22. He married Elizabeth Boothe on 22 February 1771, in Gloucester, Virginia, United States.
