The Geddes Burns is a copy of Robert Burns's 1787 Poems, Chiefly in the Scottish Dialect (Edinburgh Edition) with twenty-seven extra pages with twelve poems and songs in Burns's handwriting bound in, and a letter to Catholic Bishop John Geddes from the poet, written at Ellisland Farm.
Geddes Burns. Bishop John Geddes's copy of the interleaved 1787 Edinburgh Edition of Burns's poems, in which the poet wrote additional poems. It was printed in a facsimile edition of 473 copies for distribution to the Bibliophile Society of Boston in 1908.
5 de fev. de 2014 · John Geddes’ original book, complete with the letter and the handwritten work of Burns, is now in the Henry E Huntington Library & Art Gallery, now just known as The Huntington, in San Marino, California. One of the 473 copies of “The Geddes Burns” is with us here in Balerno.
'The Geddes Burns' is now with an owner in America and 473 facsimile copies have been published. Geddes was responsible, in his position of influence as a Catholic bishop, in persuading five Catholic seminaries to subscribe to the 'Edinburgh Edition'.
In the history of Catholics in eighteenth-century Edinburgh, the winter of 1786 was notable for marking the first meeting of Bishop John Geddes with the poet Robert Burns. Following the first ‘Kilmarnock’, Burns had come to the capital to oversee the printing by William Creech of the enlarged Edinburgh second edition of his poems.
