  2. St Mary’s School was established in 1872 in Paddington, then a relatively wealthy area of London, by the Anglican Foundation of The Sister of the Community of St. Mary the Virgin, Wantage. It was one of the earliest establishments to reflect changing Victorian attitudes to the education of women.

  4. IN 1853, a Mrs F A Trevelyan bought the land in Wantage on which St Michael’s stands between Priory Road and the Letcombe Brook. Two years later, the foundation stone was laid for the house north of the two larger buildings, all designed by the architect William White. An apsidal was added to the chapel in 1888, by the architect A B Allin.

Empowered by a specific Act of Parliament, the Norman chapel of St Mary, which had existed since at least 1351, was converted to a school, referred to as the grammar school or the Latin School, in 1597. 1604 Work was started on the English School; sited in St Mary's churchyard; it took 15 years to complete. 1832

  7. SMOGs are the old girls of St Mary’s School, Wantage (1873-2006) and SMETs are the St Mary's Ex Teachers. In 2006 St Mary’s merged with Heathfield School, Ascot. It is now more important than ever before for the SMOGs and SMETs to keep in touch and ensure that the St Mary’s name and traditions will live on.
