The University of Strathclyde (Scottish Gaelic: Oilthigh Shrath Chluaidh) is a public research university located in Glasgow, Scotland. Founded in 1796 as the Andersonian Institute, it is Glasgow's second-oldest university, having received its royal charter in 1964 as the first technological university in the United Kingdom.

Anderson had been Professor of Oriental Languages and of Natural Philosophy at the University of Glasgow, who sought to create a "university" for the teaching of practical scientific and industrial subjects.

Anderson's institution. When the University was first created as Anderson's Institution in 1796, Thomas Garnett was appointed as Professor of Physics and Philosophy, and Lecturer in Chemistry. He gave his first lecture on Natural Philosophy and Chemistry on October 26, the same year.
Anderson's Institution renamed Anderson's University in 1828. Anderson's University renamed the Glasgow and West of Scotland Technical College in 1887. As well as our origins in Anderson's institution, our Faculty of Business has its origins in the Glasgow Athenaeum.
