Virginia State University ( VSU or Virginia State) is a public historically Black land-grant university in Ettrick, Virginia. Founded on March 6, 1882, Virginia State developed as the United States's first fully state-supported four-year institution of higher learning for Black Americans.

Virginia State University, founded in 1882, is one of Virginia's two land-grant institutions, and is located 23 miles south of Richmond in the village of Ettrick. With a current student population of approximately 4,700, the University sits atop a rolling landscape overlooking the Appomattox River with expansive views of Petersburg.
