Queen Dowager Zhao was the wife of King Zhuangxiang of Qin and the mother of Qin Shi Huang, the first emperor of China. She was a concubine of a merchant, a hostage of Zhao, and a prisoner of Qin, and had a controversial relationship with Lao Ai.
A queen dowager or dowager queen (compare: princess dowager or dowager princess) is a title or status generally held by the widow of a king. In the case of the widow of an emperor, the title of empress dowager is used.
King Zhuangxiang of Qin (281–247 BCE) was the father of Qin Shi Huang, the first emperor of China. He married Lady Zhao, a merchant's daughter, and named her his queen consort.
