  1. Owain ap Hywel (died c. 988) was king of Deheubarth in south Wales and probably also controlled Powys. Owain was one of the three sons of King Hywel the Good. Upon Hywel's death in 948, Owain, Rhodri, and Edwin divided his lands among themselves according to Welsh law.

    Owain ap Hywel Dda was king of South Wales. Stewart Baldwin identifies Owain's parents as Hywel Dda ap Cadell, king of South Wales, d. 950 [AC]. [HG.1: "[H]iguel map Catell"] and Elen ferch Llywarch, d. 929 [AC.b: "Helena obiit"]. Owain appears as "[O]uen map [H]iguel" in [AC] (which gives his ancestry through his father), and "[O]uein map Elen" in [HG.1,2] (which gives his ancestry through his mother).     Marriage: Wife Unknown

    Stewart Baldwin states that Owain's wife is Unknown. Cawley agrees that the name of Owain´s wife is not known. Boyer asserts that Owain had a first marriage to an unnamed woman but then married, secondly Angharad ferch Llywelyn ap Merfyn ap Rhodri Mawr. While many later sources give Angharad as the wife of Owain, Baldwin asserts that "The claim that she was Angharad ferch Llywelyn ap Merfyn ap Rhodri (see #1024) appears only in late manuscripts, and should be regarded as dubious.   4. MAREDUDD ab OWAIN ap HYWEL DDA (died 999), king of Deheubarth. He succeeded his aged father as sole ruler of Deheubarth in 986, and in the same year repeated the achievement of his grandfather by reuniting Gwynedd and Deheubarth for the period of his reign.
