Johann Adolf of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg (18 May 1721, Gotha – 29 April 1799, Friedrichstanneck, now a district of Eisenberg, Thuringia), was a German prince of the House of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg and a Saxon lieutenant general.

Biography. German prince and a member of the House of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg, as the youngest son of Friedrich II, Duke of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg and Magdalene Augusta of Anhalt-Zerbst. Since 1735 the prince was educated in Geneva and joined the Danish military service in 1739.
In Altenburg on 27 November 1734, Fredericka married Prince Johann Adolf of Saxe-Weissenfels as his second wife. Two years later (1736), Johann Adolf inherited the paternal domains after the death of his older brother.
Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg (German: Sachsen-Gotha-Altenburg) was a duchy ruled by the Ernestine branch of the House of Wettin in today's Thuringia, Germany. The extinction of the line in 1825 led to a major re-organisation of the Thuringian states.

Died in 1595. 1563 - 1566. John Frederick continues to pursue the aim of regaining his family's lost territory and the Saxon electorship which has been lost to Saxe-Meissen. John's able military commander, Wilhelm von Grumbach, attacks Würzburg in furtherance of this aim.
