Earlier Life. Thomas was educated at home before entering Trinity College, Cambridge in 1558.

On the latter's death almost all these properties passed to his son by his first wife, Thomas Cecil, created Earl of Exeter in 1605; other Cecil estates, however, in Hertfordshire and elsewhere, passed to Robert Cecil, Thomas' half-brother, who was created Earl of Salisbury (see Gascoyne-Cecil).
