Thomas Cecil, 1st Earl of Exeter, KG (5 May 1542 – 8 February 1623), known as Lord Burghley from 1598 to 1605, was an English politician, courtier and soldier.

20 de nov. de 2022 · Thomas Cecil, later 1st Earl of Exeter was born on 5 May 1542, in the Parish of St Mary the Great, Cambridge, the only child of William Cecil, later 1st Lord Burghley, and his first wife Mary Cheke. Earlier Life. Thomas was educated at home before entering Trinity College, Cambridge in 1558.

On the latter's death almost all these properties passed to his son by his first wife, Thomas Cecil, created Earl of Exeter in 1605; other Cecil estates, however, in Hertfordshire and elsewhere, passed to Robert Cecil, Thomas' half-brother, who was created Earl of Salisbury (see Gascoyne-Cecil).
