Jan Rubens (1530–1587) was a Flemish magistrate of Antwerp, best known today as the father of Peter Paul Rubens . Family. Rubens was born in Antwerp to Barthélemy Ruben. [1] . He was trained as a scholar and travelled to Italy where he received his diploma in Canon law in Rome in 1550.

He became not only the court portraitist but a major religious painter. His Baroque altarpieces of The Raising of the Cross (1610) for St. Walburga's in Antwerp and the Descent from the Cross (1611-14) for Antwerp Cathedral established Rubens as the leading painter of Flanders.
Jan Rubens (* 13. März 1530 in Antwerpen; † 1. März 1587 in Köln) war Schöffe und Ratsherr in Antwerpen. Nach seiner Flucht vor dem Blutrat ließ er sich 1568 zunächst als freier Anwalt in Köln nieder, wo er auch Anna von Sachsen, die zweite Frau von Wilhelm von Oranien, beriet.

Jan Rubens se tornou um conselheiro jurídico (e amante) de Ana da Saxónia, a segunda esposa de Guilherme I, príncipe de Orange, e se assentou na corte dela em Siegen em 1570. Após Jan Rubens ter sido preso por causa do relacionamento, Peter Paul Rubens nasceu, no ano de 1577.
