In this lesson, students use a model to investigate why the stars are visible at night but disappear when the Sun comes out during the day. In the activity, Star Projector, students use paper cups to project stars onto a sky picture, and observe what happens to these stars when a flashlight acts as a model of the Sun. Preview activity.
Why do stars only come out at night? The stars are in the sky both day and night. During the day our star, the Sun, makes our sky so bright that we cannot see the much dimmer stars. At night, when the sky is dark, the light of the stars can be seen.
To understand why stars shine, we must first understand the tiny particles that make up matter. Scientists have studied matter in their laboratories for many, many years. What they have learned about matter is that it is made up of different kinds of atoms — hydrogen atoms, carbon atoms, and iron atoms, for example.

5 de out. de 2022 · Stars appear to move at night due to the fact our planet, Earth, rotates on it’s axis. When you take a look at the night sky and view the stars for hours on end, you might notice that their position slightly changes over time. On another note, this view can be different depending on where you are in the world.
In the past creating imaginary images out of stars became useful for navigating at night and for keeping track of the seasons. Because all the stars are at different distances, the constellations would look totally different to inhabitants of another planet orbiting another star.
