Howard Ashman. Howard Elliott Ashman (May 17, 1950 – March 14, 1991) was an American playwright, lyricist and stage director. [1] He is most widely known for his work on feature films for Walt Disney Animation Studios, for which Ashman wrote the lyrics and Alan Menken composed the music. [2]
Howard Ashman was a native of Baltimore who grew up loving MUSIC. In 1974, after graduating from Goddard College in Vermont and receiving his MFA from Indiana University—where he was also a member of the professional acting company—Ashman moved to New York.

Howard Sings Ashman. Songwriter Series. In late 1985, Hamlisch and Ashman met with Bob Fosse after a workshop performance of the show to try and interest him in the project. Ashman’s tape of that meeting survives, and it offers a rare look at three musical theatre luminaries discussing the strengths and weaknesses of a major work in progress.
