A brief history of Rugby School. At least two centuries of Rugby’s history are written in the stones and other monuments to tradition that stand around the School Close, where in 1823, local lad William Webb Ellis, with a fine disregard for the rules of football, took the ball in his arms and ran with it, originating the game of rugby football.
As one of the top academic schools in Britain, teaching and learning is at the core of what we do. Students at Rugby have the benefit of fantastic educational facilities and highly qualified staff teaching GCSE, A Level and the IB Diploma.

A very warm welcome to the Admissions Department at Rugby School. We are here to help every step of the way to make the admissions journey an easy one. Having explored our website, we encourage you to come and see us, and experience Rugby School for yourself.
The Admissions Department can arrange personal visits during the term (Tuesday to Friday). Please try to give us at least one week’s notice. Such visits can include a meeting with a senior member of the Admissions team and a tour of the school with our pupils and lunch in a boarding house.
We are excited to announce a new all-through boarding pathway from Bilton Grange to Rugby School. Children joining as a new boarder at Bilton Grange in Year 7 will be able to continue their boarding journey straight through to Rugby School without the need to apply for assessment against external applicants.
