In fact, we probably ought to see "children", "fathers" and "young men" as collectively referring to the members of the Johannine community as a whole. These 'fallen' children became 'mighty', great men not in terms of physical size (giants), but in terms of individual worldly achievement: success, power and physical ability. They were not 'sons of God' because they did not 'call upon the name of the Lord', they did not 'walk with God', and the spirit of God did not 'abide' in them as it did their fathers.
