Max von Sydow (/ f ɒ n ˈ s iː d oʊ /, [1] Swedish: [fɔn ˈsy̌ːdɔv] ⓘ; born Carl Adolf von Sydow; 10 April 1929 – 8 March 2020) was a Swedish-French [2] actor. He had a 70-year career in European and American cinema, television, and theatre, appearing in more than 150 films and several television series in multiple languages.

He became one of Sweden's most admired and professional actors, and is the only male Swedish actor to receive an Oscar nomination. He was nominated twice: for Pelle the Conqueror (1987) in 1988 and for Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close (2011) in 2012.
