The "Blood Stripe" has nothing to do with the battle in Mexico or the death of NCOs in battle. When the uniform was adopted in the 1850s it was custom to distinguish rank on the trousers. No stripe private, a like half inch stripe was corporal, an inch stripe was sergeant and up, while a pencil thin strip was officer.
