Há 3 dias · Parent kestrels were exposed to chemical cues: human fresh urine (predator), cologne (odorous control), or water (odourless control) in the nest when provisioning for nestlings. They did not display clear signs of aggressive antipredator behaviour when in contact with kairomones released by a non-present human predator.
Há 1 dia · For patients as young as this kestrel, extra care must be taken to prevent these associations. The next piece of the puzzle in most cases is to house young animals with other individuals of the same species. This isn’t possible for the lone kestrel chick since we don’t have any other kestrels close to that age in care.
Há 4 dias · Karl, our guide, estimated we’d seen over 15 different species, including American Kestrels, ravens, turkey vultures, and Prairie Falcons. The kestrels even give us a show, a male and female pair launching a midair attack on a passerby raven, who, presumably, cast a hungry eye just a little too long on the kestrels’ nest.
Há 4 dias · Kestrels are adept hunters, chowing down on everything from insects like grasshoppers and dragon flies, small mammals and birds (this one I know…). They are particularly fond of voles and mice. I’ve seen plenty of the latter in our courtyard, lucky them (the birds that is, not the mice!)
Há 4 dias · American Kestrels are North America’s smallest falcon. Kestrels lay average clutches of 4-6 eggs. Incubation is done by both the male and female and normally takes about 30 days. Kestrel nestlings fledge at about 30 days as well.
Há 3 dias · Buntings, warblers, bluebirds, flickers, tree swallows, wrens and even tanagers are known to nest in post-fire landscapes. Burned land is the edge of a wave of new bird life. Kestrels also ride that wave. I’ve been using an app on my phone to help me identify birdsong in Yeld Wood, which is only a short distance from Hanter Hill.
