When we see Shane putting his head on Rick’s chest he genuinely seems like he thought he was dead, but then he barricades the door so walkers don’t get at him. I’ve rewatched TWD so many times and still unsure if he genuinely thought he was dead.
So in defense of Shane, going into a city full of walkers to rescue a group that’s likely trapped/surrounded/already dead or nearly dead is basically a suicide mission. Like, we rarely see them handle walkers with confidence in season 1.
