When Wentworth says to Anne, “You did not use to like cards; but time makes many changes,” she responds “I am not yet so much changed.” Then she stops herself, “fearing she hardly knew what misconstruction.”

In the present of the story, she is 27 and must endure his return — as a naval captain — into her society.
