He was the guitarist, singer, and principal songwriter for the rock band The Velvet Underground and had a solo career that spanned five decades.

Even though he had his feet firmly planted in the world of art rock throughout the majority of his professional career, it wasn’t out of the question for him to try on any kind of genre that would suit him, from the glam rock pastiches in the 1970s to making pure noise on Metal Machine Music.
