The Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study provides a comprehensive picture of mortality and disability across countries, time, age, and sex. It quantifies health loss from hundreds of diseases, injuries, and risk factors, so that health systems can be improved and disparities eliminated.

WHO’s Global Health Estimates (GHE) provide the latest available data on death and disability globally, by region and country, and by age, sex and cause. The latest updates include global, regional and country trends from 2000 to 2019 inclusive.
At a global level, the largest disease burden in 2019 comes from cardiovascular diseases. This is followed by cancers, neonatal disorders, musculoskeletal disorders, respiratory infections, and mental and substance use disorders.
