[note 1] He was a younger son of Alan fitz Flaad and Avelina de Hesdin. In about 1136, Walter entered into the service of David I, King of Scotland.

He had a daughter, Avelina, who married Duncan, earl of Carrick, and a son, Walter (d.1241), who became third hereditary steward upon his father's death.

The family gained extensive estates in Renfrew, Kyle, Berwickshire, Roxburghshire and Haddingtonshire. Walter married Eschina and they had a son, Alan (d. 1204), who served as steward to William I. Walter died in 1177.
