Thomas Pelham, 1st Baron Pelham of Laughton Bt (c. 1653 – 23 February 1712) was a moderate English Whig politician and Member of Parliament for several constituencies. He is best remembered as the father of two British prime ministers ( Henry Pelham and the Duke of Newcastle ) who, between them, served for 18 years as first minister.
Thomas Pelham-Holles, 1st Duke of Newcastle upon Tyne and 1st Duke of Newcastle-under-Lyme, KG, PC, FRS (21 July 1693 – 17 November 1768) was an English Whig statesman who served as Prime Minister of Great Britain, his official life extended throughout the Whig supremacy of the 18th century.
In 1768 Pelham succeeded his cousin the Duke of Newcastle as second Baron Pelham of Stanmer according to a special remainder in the letters patent. He also inherited the Pelham baronetcy created in 1611. Pelham also served as Surveyor-General of Customs of London from 1773 to 1805 and as the last Keeper of the Great Wardrobe from
Thomas Pelham (who also inherited the personal and political papers of the Duke of Newcastle, kept during his lifetime at Claremont (Surrey)) was the grandson of Henry Pelham of Lewes (brother of the 1st Baron Pelham), who had acquired Stanmer c.1716 and built a house there in the 1720s.
