  2. House of Mirth is one of my favorite books because it reads super campy to me from a 21st century lens. Wharton definitely intended it as a tragedy, but after learning more about Wharton's background (comical, Scrooge McDuck-level wealthy) and attitudes (she used to drop her manuscripts on the floor for servants to clean up), I see it more as a tragicomedy.
