Every year teams of men, women and children carry sacks of British wool, 60-pound (27 kg) for men’s races and 35 pounds (16 kg) for women’s, up and down the Gumstool Hill with course of 240 yards (220 meters).

On the south-east the hill is emphasized by manmade ramparts and much of the rest of its circumference has a sharp though apparently naturally formed ridge, parts of which were adopted as the outer boundary of properties.

The residual Tetbury parish had 1,989 inhabitants in 1901 and there was little alteration in the earlier 20th century, with 2,237 in 1931; after the war new housing produced a rise in population to 3,117 by 1961.
