The QWERTY design is based on a layout included in the Sholes and Glidden typewriter sold via E. Remington and Sons from 1874.

Luckily, there is a neat little trick, which seperates the non-caps lock presses, and caps lock presses. We add a letter at the end of the caps-lock presses.
