During the Song dynasty, the Caodong lineage became closely associated with the teaching of "silent illumination" (Ch: mozhao) as formulated by Hongzhi Zhengjue (1091—1157).

During this period, the practice of koan, a form of paradoxical dialogue, became popular and helped spread Zen teachings.
