She paid for his living expenses and his gambling debts and introduced him to her 14-year-old daughter Cheryl Crane, the child of her second marriage to restaurateur Stephen Crane. Johnny Stompanato was often violent with Turner and reportedly abused her during their frequent arguments while Crane looked on.
