John Armstrong Jr. (November 25, 1758 – April 1, 1843) was an American soldier, diplomat and statesman who was a delegate to the Continental Congress, U.S. Senator from New York, and United States Secretary of War under President James Madison.

John Armstrong Jr. was an officer in the Continental Army and the anonymous author of the infamous Newburgh Address in March 1783. He survived the incident to have an active political career, serving as a member of the House of Representatives and the Senate, as the U.S. ambassador to France, and as secretary of war during the War of 1812.

During the War for Independence, he may have played a key role in the Newburgh Conspiracy, when officers challenged the authority of Congress.

Then, thirty years later, he was Secretary of War during the War of 1812. Perhaps most curiously, Armstrong was the only Delegate to the Continental Congress who lived long enough to have his picture taken.
