It was first discovered by Pierre Méchain on January 17, 1786, and was later independently rediscovered by Johann Franz Encke on November 2, 1818. The comet is named after Encke, who calculated its orbit and predicted its return in 1822.

Die Bahn des Enckeschen Kometen wurde in der Folge regelmäßig vermessen, und man stellte hierbei erstmals Abweichungen vom Newtonschen Gravitationsgesetz fest.
