U Prvom svetskom ratu bio je vrhovni zapovednik srpske vojske u bitkama na Ceru i Kolubari 1914, kad je srpska vojska potpuno razbila vojsku Austrougarske Monarhije. Ponovo napadnuta 1915. od Nemačke i Bugarske, Srbija je podlegla u neravnopravnoj borbi.
